One PowerShell command downloads the newest release from GitHub and runs its installer. It also upgrades an existing install. This is one of two equal ways to install; the other is the setup program. Xackup 2.12 is the stable release, and there are no other release channels.
Before you start
- Windows 10 (1607) or Windows Server 2016 or newer.
- Internet access the first time. The installer downloads the .NET 8 Desktop Runtime, the ASP.NET Core 8 Runtime (both 32-bit) and WebView2 if they are missing.
- A PowerShell window run as Administrator: right-click PowerShell, then Run as administrator.
Install

Install one particular version
To go back to an earlier release, give its version:
& ([scriptblock]::Create((irm https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Fungusware/Xackup/main/desktop/install.ps1))) -Version 2.12.15.0
Replace 2.12.15.0 with a version from the releases page.
What the installer does
- Removes an older setup-program (MSI) install of Xackup v2, keeping your jobs and settings.
- Installs any missing runtimes.
- Copies Xackup to
C:\Program Files (x86)\Fungusware\Xackup v2. - Registers the
XackupAPIservice to start at boot, and starts it. - Adds Start menu and desktop shortcuts, and an Apps & features entry.
It asks a few questions. Press Enter to accept the answer in brackets. The one that matters is whether other computers may connect.
The command works whatever the script execution policy is: the policy is bypassed for that run only.
Check it worked
Start Xackup v2 from the Start menu. To check the service:
Get-Service XackupAPI
It should be Running.
If something goes wrong
If the computer cannot reach raw.githubusercontent.com, download PowerShell installer package from the Downloads page and run it by hand (see PowerShell installer options), or use the setup program.
